Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha, the eighth imam of the Shi’a school of thought, lived a life full of ups and downs. After his father was martyred in Baghdad, he took on the role of imamah and led the Shi’a through difficult times during the reign of three different Abbasid caliphs, namely Harun, Amin, and Ma’mun al-Abbasi.
While he spent the majority of his life in Madinah, during the last two years of his life, he was forced by Ma’mun to leave on an unprecedented trip to Khurasan. In his final years in Khurasan, he was forced to take on the role of crown prince. He was also tested by the caliph on multiple occasions through debates with the heads of religions and schools in Marw. He was finally martyred in the year 203 A.H. by poison.
The Imam was eventually buried in Tus, near the grave of Harun al-Rashid, as he had predicted many times beforehand.
