This four-hour workshop will explore themes of womanhood and female empowerment in a critical format.

Key questions include:

(1) What are Qur’anic paradigms of femininity and womanhood (if any)? What does it mean to be a woman?
(2) Should we and can we deconstruct feminism? Or is feminism a useful tool in navigating contentious issues of women’s rights?
(3) How do we navigate controversial Islamic laws concerning women in the modern day? For example, how do we understand the rules on divorce which some may argue, seem to be at tension with the idea that women are fully autonomous?
(4) What are some tools that we can use to navigate difficult questions in the Islamic tradition like hadith on women being deficient, etc?
